Singapore's longest man-made waterway has made its way into Punggol New Town. Built at a cost of $225 million, My Waterway@Punggol was constructed by damming two reservoirs - Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol.
Sunday, Oct 23, 2011 Housing estate Punggol saw a new addition to its facilities today when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially opened the Punggol Waterway.
Speaking at the opening, PM Lee said he was happy to witness the completion of the waterway, which some call 'Venice of Punggol'.
He recounted how it was a long journey to complete the waterway, after initial plans for Punggol 21 were affected by the Asian financial crisis.
However, the plans for the waterway were revisited and improved after the economy recovered.
PM Lee said in his speech that Punggol Waterway was a central feature of the Punggol 21 Plus plan to transform Punggol into the "Waterfront Town of the 21st Century".
He also said there will be 23,000 families living in Punggol by the end of 2011, with a new commercial hub and town plaza by Punggol MRT by 2015.
The project cements Punggol's claims as Singapore's first 'eco-precinct', where every aspect, from building…
In conjuction with the official opening of the Punggol Waterway, graced by our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, on 23 October 2011, HDB will be organising the Punggol Waterway Fiesta with a range of exciting activities, such as performances and pyrotechnics display, along the waterway from 2pm to 10pm!! Come along and join in the fun. You wouldn’t want to miss this significant event for Punggol!

SINGAPORE: Forty-five HDB blocks in Punggol will be fitted with solar panels by the middle of next year, in Singapore's first solar leasing project.
The solar power generated panels will be used to power services in common areas such as lift operations, corridor and staircase lightings, and water pumps.
This makes up 10 per cent of total block usuage.
Private company Sunseap Enterprises will finance the design, maintenance and installation of the two mega-watt peak solar system.
HDB will cover 30 per cent of the start up costs at S$3.28 million, while the remaining costs will be covered by Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council's monthly payment for solar power, over the next 20 years.
But this will be lower than what the council usually pays for electricity because the price of solar power is at a 1 per cent discount from Sunseap Enterprises.
"At the moment, solar power generation is still likely to be more expensive than generation of energy from …

First founded in a neighbourhood coffeeshop amidst the friendly Ang Mo Kio estate, the ever-popular Uncle Leong Seafood has now heightened into a full-fledged restaurant at Punggol End. Still keeping its modesty, Uncle Leong Seafood serves up the day's first dish as they do daily; at 4.30pm sharp and very delicious.
Uncle leong Seafood is the one of THE places to go for crab, based on the signature recipe that has drawn a keen following since the first public taste in 2002. Today, Uncle Leong Seafood welcomes a daily haul of customers comprising both locals and foreigners.
“Shimmering Sand Crab delight”, Uncle Leong’s wonderful signature dish, is a mouthful, but a tasty one! The dish is an orginal Uncle Leong recipe: larger than average crab drizzled with Uncle Leong's signature sauce and topped with a sprinkle of oat, a combination of flavours that complement the fresh flesh excellently. The aroma alone will leave you wanting more. Other must-try dishes are the “Crab Bee Hoo…

SINGAPORE: One block of public housing in Singapore's Punggol eco-town will be a test-bed for environmentally-friendly energy solutions.
The project is a collaboration between Japanese electronics giant Panasonic and government agencies - the Housing and Development Board, the Economic Development Board and the Energy Market Authority.
It aims to get 10 households in the block of HDB flats to participate and may include more homes later.
An integrated energy system will help families reduce their carbon footprint and utilities bill.
Energy-producing solar panels will be fitted on the block of flats and these will power lifts and lighting during the day.
Excess electricity generated by the solar panels can be stored in batteries, which households can tap on for energy at night. This potentially means zero emissions being generated in powering an entire housing block.
SINGAPORE: Residents at Punggol North celebrated racial and religious harmony with a street parade at Punggol Field.
Part of the Punggol Field road was closed on Sunday as residents brought celebrations to the streets.
This annual street parade allows residents from different races to learn more about different cultures and beliefs.
This year, some 3,300 people came together to put up a mass Cha Cha dance item in attempt to break a Guinness World Record.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is the MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, outlined several upcoming developments in Punggol for the residents to enjoy - including Punggol Waterway and Punggol Promenade.
But he said beyond physical facilities, the most important thing is to build a community spirit and have the residents feel that Punggol is home.
Two new reservoirs opened in northeast Singapore, giving Singapore a much-needed boost to water supply. Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs are the latest additions, bringing the total number of water catchment areas in Singapore to 17.
PUB announced today that they increase the water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore, together with the Marina Reservoir.
The milestone achievement was celebrated in a ceremony officiated by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Balakrishnan said that Singapore is "well on our way to self-sufficiency" with imported water from Johor, NEWater, and desalinated water providing Singapore with a sustainable water supply.
Created by the damming of Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon, the Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs will collect rainwater from estates and areas within Punggol and Sengkang, and parts of Hougang and Ang Mo Kio.
The Housing & Development Board (HDB) has put up an Executive Condominium (EC) housing site at Punggol Way for sale.
The land parcel was released for sale under the Confirmed List of the first half of the Government Land Sales programme.
The 99-year lease site can yield up to an estimated 720 housing units.
The HDB says the land parcel has a site area of about 25,000 sq m, with a maximum gross floor area of around 75,500 sq m.
It added that the site is located in Punggol Town, and is near the Punggol transport hub comprising the LRT, MRT and a bus interchange. Analysts agree that the site is well located.
Mr Nicholas Mak, executive director of SLP International Property Consultants, said: "This land parcel is located only about 700m from the Punggol MRT Station and the future EC development is likely to be popular with home buyers. Although there is another EC project in Punggol that could be launched in the next two months, this te…

SINGAPORE - Residents in the fast-growing Sengkang and Punggol areas will be served by a new hospital and an additional polyclinic.
Opening in 2020, the Sengkang hospital - which will likely have between 500 and 600 beds - will be the third new hospital to be up-and-running in a decade, following the opening of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital last year and the scheduled opening of the Jurong Hospital in 2014.
On Friday, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan announced substantial investments in the healthcare infrastructure, including a S$50-million upgrade of polyclinics at Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Geylang, Tampines and Yishun over the next five years. A new polyclinic will also be built in Punggol.

A quiet neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Singapore, Punggol has transformed itself into a new residential community. The Punggol area was once dotted with farmhouses, rearing poultry, pig and fish farming, as well as plantations.
Much of Punggol is populated with young couples settling into newly built public housing flats. With new urban developments, the estate is now busier with shopping malls and better transportation options.
Take a trip to Punggol Beach and experience the quiet life, freedom and nature on the clean beach.
The beach brings back grim memories to older generations because during the World War II in 1942, 400 Chinese civilians were massacred by the Japanese soldiers. Located at Punggol Point, this place is also known as Punggol Beach Massacre. The location has been marked as a national heritage site.

As a small island that doesn't have natural aquifers and lakes and with little land to collect rainwater, Singapore needs to maximise whatever it can harvest.
Currently, Singapore uses two separate systems to collect rainwater and used water. Rainwater is collected through a comprehensive network of drains, canals, rivers and stormwater collection ponds before it is channelled to Singapore's 17 reservoirs for storage. This makes Singapore one of the few countries in the world to harvest urban stormwater on a large scale for its water supply.
The newest reservoirs are Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs which are our 16th and 17th reservoirs. By 2011, the water catchment area has increased from half to two-thirds of Singapore’s land surface with the completion of the Marina, Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs.
With all the major estuaries already dammed to create reservoirs, PUB aims to harness water from the remaining streams and rivulets near the shoreline using technology that ca…
